Need to fill out employment forms this evening. Don't think I'll sign up for the 403(b) -- as there's no matching, just pre tax. Think I'd rather just pop it in my savings; wait until I get a 401(k).Spent the weekend running errands and running. Not in super good form, but in form and that's a start. Also thought a bit on my schedule and though it's a bit austere (work, university, the occasional run), it'll be just fine.
It's times like these I remember one of the varsity rowers who was prepping to go to med school when I was rowing at Tulane. He was a first rate rower, smart, a nice but serious guy, and always had his MCAT books with him. He'd take them on the road and on meal breaks (or any other break for that matter). During racing season, between cities, he'd eat with the team and then get a booth or table in a quiet corner by himself to study. And, when the others were out schmoozing, he'd schmooze for a bit and then head inside or to the hotel room to get work done. I never knew him well, but I respected him and what he was doing. It's a question of priorities and discipline and I take his example to heart -- I can't lose sight of the overall objective, nor can I afford to, nor do I want to.
Saw my friend Jane today down at her store on South Congress. Things were buzzing and she looked well. Dropped off some trashy 1950s novels I found in Bolivia she can sell in the shop and she was thrilled. We'll have lunch on Thursday and I'm looking forward to catching up. Also saw one of my favorite students today when I went for my morning walk. He's at UT Law now, has a new wife and baby daughter, and doing very well. A typical Texan, booming voice, a man's man, but also smart and nice and incredibly well-adjusted. It was nice to see him.
Going to run w/ De this evening and call it a day. As far as I'm concerned, it all begins tomorrow. I wish I could remember the crew guy's name and know where he is now.
B.
