Atender? Spanish slang for what exactly?

Been getting some interesting calls since I got here and the phone rings at odd times. Last night, for example, at 4 am. I didn't answer it. Just got one and all the guy said was: Usted atiende hoy? Which translates into: Do you attend/see to/serve/etc. today? Of course, given the odd question, my immediate response was -- Attend to what exactly? At which point the fellow hung up. An appropriate question I suppose in a largely Catholic country -- today being Sunday and all.

This follows a couple of similar calls, which are now beginning to make sense, and one memorable one in which the service was offered and not asked for. Don't have enough of that kind of spanish to know whether "atender" is slang for services of a certain kind, but today I got that impression. Anyone know for certain? I tried googling, but that wasn't especially helpful.

So now I'm wondering who had this # and apt before me and what exactly were they up to?
