Just revisited my early effort at blogging (a private blog on aol), which only lasted two months and a day or so. Very rudimentary, and I didn't think it'd mean much to me, but it was really very nice to revisit those months, which were pivotal. It was my final semester before heading off to fieldwork, the semester of grant/fellowship applications before I even knew I'd be able to head off for fieldwork.
Reading the old stuff puts things in perspective. I really was thinking and working hard to get this thing through. It's productive (at least for me) to read my comments and thoughts as I was going through the process. Nice to see pictures of my old place. Nice to see pictures of the winning application in its envelope about to be mailed (before I knew it was a winning application). Nice too to see what I was up to and and the daily goings-on with friends and family. Which -- to get to the point -- reminds me of how important it is to chronicle our lives and the people who people them. There are little and big things we think we'll remember and we don't.
So blog, journal, jot and/or snap. But do something.
B.
