Tulane-Texas and other things

Dear Friends, Am very proud to report that President Faulkner of UT issued a statement regarding UT assistance to students and faculty affected by Katrina (http://www.utexas.edu/opa/news/2005/08/katrina31.html). It made me proud, so I wrote him and told him as much. In sum, students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) will be able to take classes, have access to research facilities, etc.; faculty will also have access to office space, libraries, research facilities and services and the opportunity to work at UT. Bravo UT and the UT Community.

On the research front, since I´m writing the heads of universities today, I emailed the Rector here at UMRPSFXCH (that´s short for the Universidad Mayor, Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier de Chuauisaca), as well as the gentleman in charge of public relations (who happens to be an old school chum of my father´s). Hopefully I´ll get a welcoming response, though it looks as though the rector is going to be extremely busy over the next few months as he´s agreed to run for the Prefectura here. He won´t yet resign his post, which I suppose is lucky for my purposes. Bo is having elections in December and all the parties are circling the wagons. It´s no worse than in the US, which is to say things are defy-rationality-crazy. I also sent in my first ¨Dispatch from Sucre, Bolivia¨to the Fellowship people. It´s not too bad and I´ll forward the link once it gets posted, for anyone who is interested.

On the friends front, REC is back from down under and settling in nicely to her posh position at CMC. My good friends from TU have been in frequent touch this week and are doing well in Iowa and the UK, respectively. And my favorite Abrelatas is back from his tour of the old country and no doubt in the middle of classes, scowling at students. Finally! My people in ForTX report that Nemo´s fur is finally growing back (from the iv) and that he´s happy and healthy.

Finally (finally), the reason the CBA keeps a low profile is b/c several years ago, or so the report goes, it was sacked, burned and looted, by ¨anti-american¨elements. I guess that would cause anyone to keep a low profile. I´m set to meet with the Director either today or tomorrow to see if we can arrive at a mutually agreeable arrangement -- I´d like to help but have my own work to think of.

SO, I think that´s it for today. The International Cultural Festival starts today (sept 1 - 18), lots of people from all over in town, and so I´m looking forward to some excellent shows. I hope everyone is well and those of you who started classes this week having a good time.

Ads, you and Ron visiting or que?

B.
